Working from home is a dream that most Americans have likely had. Some have made it work, many have not, and a big factor that determines success from home is working a business that’s right for you.
When considering a home-based business, you really have 2 options:
Work for someone else from home.
Work for yourself from home.
Either way you look at it, your choice is difficult. Finding an employer who will allow you to work from home is often very difficult, especially in the traditional business world. Telecommuting is getting more popular these days, with a large percentage of telecommuters marketing products to consumers (we call these people “telemarketers”).
Working for yourself from home can be more trouble than it is worth, and we find many people making a success of it. Working for yourself adds new tax burdens, requiring you save receipts, document expenses, and report to the IRS, among other things. It does, however, provide substantial tax benefits, including write-offs for travel, utility bills, and other expenses.
The technology industry has increasingly contributed to the “work from home” phenomenon, especially with the aid of the internet. Corporate employees are now able to work from home part-time or full-time, depending on employment requirements. Others are starting business completely on the internet through existing companies like eBay, or even creating their own online “stores” or similar sites.
Overall, earning income from your own home is very plausible, it just needs to be done the right way. If you are pondering beginning a home-based business, some of the following might provide insights as you begin.
1. The internet provides a powerful medium for home-based business. Learning to use it can greatly improve your results.
*Note: If you have created (or are considering creating) your own website, find a SEO (Search Engine Optimization) Forum to find methods to get your website recognized by major search engines. This will improve traffic to your website dramatically.
2. Learn to use free advertising. You have heard this before, I’m sure, but the “too-good-to-be-true” methods usually are. You don’t always have to pay for advertising, you just need to find ways to do it for free. Cross-linking to other websites that complement your own is great medium of free advertising (this also helps in your SEO efforts). Another method of advertising, although not free, is PPC (Pay Per Click) advertising. This has the benefit of advertising relatively cheaply and paying only for advertisements to targeted (i.e. interested) people who click on your advertisement.
3. If you have some flexibility in which field you are going to work, consider looking at trends. The Baby Boom Generation controls a significant amount of wealth in this country, even though they are a relative minority. Consider this: They are now reaching retirement age. What products or services will they be using? What industries would be good to be in for this? The travel industry? The health industry? Look at your options.
4. Look for opportunities to work from home. There are many opportunities waiting for those who recognize the potential. If you see something that has potential, and you are serious about working from home, look into it. Keep in mind that Network Marketing, while it varies in popularity, can provide fulfillment to the opportunity seeker. If done right, with the right company, Network Marketing has the potential to provide a substantial amount of wealth and initially requires a low hourly commitment.
The important thing to remember is that it is possible to work from home. You just have to do it right, and do your research.
